Glory

1Pe 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

Ro 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

2Co 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

I have been thinking of how amazing is the wonder of God’s handiwork in making man. He is so intricate and detailed. He is composed of the basic elements of matter, arranged in complicated combinations of molecules which do wondrous things. Just the 5 physical senses of sight, touch, taste, hearing and smell are each fantastic within themselves. Then you add the circulatory system, the nervous system and the organs, the skeleton, mussels, skin, tendons and so forth and their operation to provide function expands the wonder even further. Lets not leave out the brain and its unequaled ability to think and reason. Then to consider that man is a trinity in that he not only has a body but also a soul and spirit and you ask the question, “For what purpose would God go to such length in creating life, only to see it die in a short time. It is glorious but so temporary.

The answer cannot be in the physical aspect of its beauty. There must be a greater purpose for man than in just who he is. The fact that the flower dies quickly reveals the fact of man’s temporary nature and the need for an eternal purpose. The answer is in God Himself. The glory of man is simply a reflection of his Creator. Man did not make himself but was created by God. The purpose of man is not to be seen as only an object to behold but become more than just physical, but more than that, to become eternal and like his creator.

Within that short span of time he makes that choice of becoming like God in his nature and being or rejecting that opportunity and attempt to make himself after his own image. We can easily see the end of that choice is death – just like the flower, because that was not why he was designed for. God’s plan for man was so much greater in every respect. First of all, the flower is to call attention to the Creator not the creation. Second, we have a sin problem that can only be remedied by God’s provision, the blood of Jesus. Thirdly, God is a good god and has only good planned for us. If we reject it then it is on us and not Him. Fourthly, the best that man can do is things of this world but God’s plan for man is eternal. The flower is only a sample of the goodness that is ours in Him, and it does not end but is eternal.

Flowers are found everywhere, all over the world. It’s like God is saying to the world, look at all I have for you. Don’t hate me when I have so much for you. Yes, I know that you have so troubled times but it is through these times that I am building in you that eternal nature that will endure forever. Just keep you focus on me and trust me that I know what I am doing. The more you view my glory, the more that you will be changed into that same image. You’ll really love it in the end.

Baptism

There has been much debate on the subject of baptism over the years that have caused a lot of confusion among believers and even the splitting of churches.  What you believe about baptism is important and can cause real problems in fellowship.  Baptism is not required for salvation.  If it were, the thief on the cross would not have been saved yet Jesus declared that they would be together in paradise that day.  Though it is not a requirement for salvation, it is a requirement of obedience and a faith walk of the believer.  It is proper evidence of your conversion.  A Scriptural baptism will include these 5 points of identification.

  1. The first point of identification is that there must be a proper candidate.  A proper candidate is one who has become a believer in Jesus as Lord and Savior.  He has been converted from the old way of living (sin) to the new life (walking by faith in Jesus).  This is done by a confrontation and confession of sin (called repentance) and the surrender of the control of your life to Jesus (faith in Him).  This is a conscious and deliberate choice of the will.  An infant is not capable of making such a choice, yet a few do make that choice at an early age prior to the teenage years.  A proper candidate is already a believer so baptism is not a part of getting saved but it is an important part of walking by faith and should be done as soon as possible after getting saved.  Without the conversion experience, you are not a proper candidate.  Baptism is not part of your qualification for salvation but an evidence that it has already been accomplished.  See Acts 2:38, 8:12-13, 36-38, Ephesians 4:5
  2. The second point of identification for a scriptural baptism is a proper mode.  A proper mode is how it is done.  The word baptism is a transliteration of the Greek word “baptizo” which is the only method used in the Bible.  It means to dip, immerse or plunge under.  The sprinkling or pouring came much later in the history of the church and was in response to the erroneous doctrine that baptism was necessary for, or a part of salvation.  Scriptural baptism knows of only one method and that is by immersion and is seen in its meaning.
  3.  It is the picture of God’s provision of our salvation in Christ:  He died on the cross, He was buried in the tomb and He was raised victorious over death hell and the grave.
  4. It is also the picture of what has happened to the believer.  He has died to sin, buried in a grave of water and raised to walk in newness of life.
  5. It is further, a picture of the Christians’ hope.  We die physically, we are buried in the ground and we will be resurrected to join Christ in the air and so shall we ever be.  See Romans 6:4-6, I Thessalonians 4:13-18
  6. The third point of identification for a scriptural baptism is a proper time.  There isn’t a lot of scripture about the timing of baptism but the scriptural example is that it should be done as soon as possible after conversion.  Acts 8:36-38  I have heard of a number of individuals who claim to be believers but have never been baptized. In every case I have observed that there is a major problem in their faith walk.  We are commanded to be baptized once we become a believer and to put it off becomes disobedience when not done promptly, as it will affect your faith walk. 
  7. The fourth point of identification of a scriptural baptism is a proper purposeMatthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.  A common question about baptism is why should I be baptized since I am already saved?  Some people have the idea that going to heave is all that is important but Jesus said that we should fulfill all righteousness.  Getting to heave is just the means of travel but God is in the business of transformation of the believer so that when he gets to heaven he will be at home.  Without this transformation we would either miss the trip all together or if we should actually make it there we would be dis figured or handicapped forever.  Here are some of the reasons that we should be baptized.
  8. It is a declaration of independence from the control of sin on our lives.  It is also a declaration of independence from the curse of the law (legalism).  Further it is a declaration of independence from the dominion of the old nature.  We are no longer a prisoner of our old nature.
  9. It is a declaration of dependence upon Christ not only to provide salvation but a means to continually be cleansed from sin by our confession of it to Him.  It is also a declaration of our dependence on the Holy Spirit to teach us the scriptures, give us recall of them (John 14:26), convict, convince and convert the world (John 16:8),  guide you into all truth (John 16:13), Shew you things to come (John 16:8), and to glorify the Lord (John 16:14).  We are totally dependent on the Lord.  Further, it is a declaration of dependence upon the Scripture.  It is wholly trustworthy as it will never pass away.  It has stood the test of time, trials and twisting and remains the sure foundation of all doctrine of God.
  10. It is a declaration of interdependence.  The church is the bride of Christ and very precious to Him.  As a part of a local church we support one another and learn  to lean on the Lord as He is in the church.
  11. Baptism is to be administered by a proper authority.  The proper authority is His church made up of His believers.  It is the church that was commissioned to carry the gospel to the whole world, to baptize the new believers and then to teach them to observe the things that He commanded us to do. (Matthew 28:19-20)  Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22) Acting under His authority and leadership we have been given the ministry of reconciliation.  (II Corinthians 5:18)

Grace and Mercy

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Recently, my wife asked me the difference between grace and mercy.  She said that she has gone over this before but still has trouble distinguishing between them.  I know that they can be confused as they are so similar.  As in the verse above they are used in the same sentence and the difference is not readily understood.   At one time I heard this explanation and it stuck and I have been using it ever since, as it made it clear to me.  Grace is getting what you don’t deserve and mercy is not getting what you do deserve.

I remember when I was growing up that there were times that I messed up and came under the judgement of my parents.  I was confronted with my fault and there was a time of discussion followed by some punishment which was then followed by my dad taking me in his arms and telling me how he loved me and that it was harder on him than it was on me.  I never understood what was so hard on him because I was the one facing the music.  This came clear to me as a parent and on the other end of the situation.  The purpose of the discussion was to make sure that my understanding was clear so that I would be able to make a good decision next time.  The punishment was never for the purpose of me paying for my transgression, but to turn me from such actions.  Had it been for punishment it would have been much more severe.  That was mercy – not getting what I deserved.  Then when it was all over and he would take me in his arms and tell me how much he loved me – that was grace- getting what I did not deserve.

So often, people do not want to come to God to be confronted with their transgressions out of fear, not knowing the heart of God.  Perhaps  no one does, but I have found that it is necessary if we are to our relationship with Him.  This is also true between individuals as well.   No matter how good the relationship was before, when a breach of that relationship happens, it is never the same again.  That does not mean that it cannot be repaired and even become greater than it ever had been, but in order for that to happen, there must be a confrontation between the offended and the offender.  If it is only dismissed or ignored then the relationship cannot continue until it is repaired. 

When the confrontation happens, then the offended must cancel the debt in some manner.  It will include both grace and mercy.  There will be a forgiveness of the debt (grace) and the holding of the person in greater value than the offence (mercy).    Whenever  the offended is not big enough to extend both grace and mercy then the offender is unable to get past the breach and will carry it from then on and it will stunt his growth in future relationships.  It will either cost you something or you will forfeit something.  So the end result is that the offender and the offended have an opportunity to grow or both become handicapped because of the offence.  It is really up to those involved as to which path they will travel. 

Study the Scriptures

My wife teaches the two year old’s in Sunday School and was sharing with me her lesson on the Ten Commandments.  It said that God wrote the Ten Commandments and she wanted to review that Scripture and asked me where it was.  I told her it was in Exodus, Chapter 20 but she could not find it there.  I told her that it says that God wrote them “with the finger of God”.  That lead me into a discussion that lasted over an hour and my searching several chapter in Exodus and then even my preparing of two studies: one about the actual writing of the Ten Commandments and the second about God‘s Covenant with Israel.  That took up all of this morning and a couple hours this afternoon.  If you would like to check out the verses that deal with the actual writing of the Ten Commandments here they are.  Exodus 24:12,31:18, 32:15, 19, 34:1, 27, 28 and Deuteronomy 4:13, 5:22, 9:10-11, 15-17, 10:1, 4

The Ten Commandments were first spoken in chapter 20; then written on the two tablets of stone that God cut out and written with the finger of God; then the tablets were broken by Moses when he saw the golden calf; then God told Moses to cut two new tablets of stone and take them up to the top of Mount Saini where they were written again by Moses and God.  Read again the above Scriptures.

There are many wonderful nuggets of truth that can be mined from the Scriptures if you will take the time to examine them carefully, prayerfully and spiritually.  Which brings me to my verse for today’s verses:

 2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 

2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

There is a need for the follower of God to study the Scriptures.  That doesn’t mean only read but to study or dig deep into not only the letter of the law but also into the spirit of the law.  What is the purpose of it being recorded?  Compare other scriptures of the same event such as the four Gospels.  Some information is common to all four but some information is only recorded in one or two or three of them.  In the Old Testament we have three sets of two books: I & II Samuel, I & II Kings and I & II Chronicles that deal with the same period of time.  You will find many such study methods that you can find similarities and comparisons that will bear rich insights that will aid you in your study. 

Secondly, remember the purpose for study.  It is not to collect information or to make you look good to others, but to gain God’s approval.  You are not doing this for selfish purposes or to gain knowledge or even to impress God.  Your purpose is that you might be stretched to hold the blessings of God; that you might be prepared to live in this world in a manner to be a blessing to others and to properly represent your God.  You want to study in such a way that you become all that you can be and to do it in a way that you are both correct and accurate in its application.

God is the source of its inspiration, the one who determines its content and preserves its message.  He has our good in mind and when we study the Scriptures, we receive a blessing.  Its study will enable us to come to the great doctrines (teachings) that God’s people have held through the ages.  It will show us when we get off course and get us back on the right course.  It will keep us on course and bring us all the way home to be with the Lord for ever.

The Glory of God

Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Why does God need Glory?”  I used to because I would hear phrases like “for the glory of God” or “praise God” and so forth.  It sounded like God needed some glory for some reason.  This was because my understanding about glory was wrong.  I thought that glory was a lot like a compliment or praise.  I did not know that glory was inherent and radiated out from within.  It was always there but was not seen.  It’s like an uncut diamond that looks like just another rock.  The beauty of the cut diamond was always present in the uncut diamond but was not appreciated because it’s many facets were not exposed.  It’s ‘glory’ remained unknown until the diamond cutter exposed it.  So it is with God, His glory (beauty, wonder, love, power, forgiveness, etc.) is not appreciated because we only see God from one or maybe even a few perspectives.  We need to see God from His infinitely faceted perspectives.  The more we know God, the greater we perceive His glory.  It was always there but it remained hidden until it was exposed to us.

Glory is not recognition for greatness, but greatness beyond our recognition.  The glory of God always has been the same.  It doesn’t become more just because we discover another facet of it.  You do not not increase His glory when you praise Him, either.  God is not trying to gain recognition, but rather He desires us to know Him for who He is, and not some shallower concept of Him.

If it were possible to know God as He really is; we would see the entirety of His glory.  Should that happen in our natural state it would kill us.  Remember what He told Moses, Ex 33:20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.  It is not that God didn’t want us to know Him as He is, but He wanted to preserve man so that he could be transformed in such a way that he could see God, face to face.

This transformation takes a lifetime but there are times when we draw closer than we have ever been before.  At these times we are transformed to be more than we were before.  Remember what happened to Moses after he was hidden in the cleft of the rock as God passed by. Ex 34:29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.   His face shone so bright that he had to wear a vail on his face while he talked with Aaron and the rulers of the congregation.  Ex 34:33 And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.  

We have to grow in our grace and knowledge of the Lord.   2Pe 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever.  Furthermore, we must be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can “experience” a right understanding of God’s will.  Ro 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  

By the time God has finished His work on us, we will be like him in His image, likeness and dominion: (Gen 1:26)  we will be sanctified in body (a new body), soul (new mind and way of thinking) and spirit (indwelling of the Holy Spirit) (I Thess 5:23).  1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

His Keeping

Having spent many years in the construction industry, I have faced many very dangerous situations.  One thing I learned is the importance of safety equipment and procedures.  There is one piece of safety equipment that I am particularly fond of and that is the safety harness.  It is a piece of equipment that will keep you from falling even if you loose your grip or even consciousness.  It has one job and that is to restrain you from falling.  The reason that it is so effective is that it is strapped onto you and holds you within it’s confines.  You are dependent on it and it is not dependent on you.

Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

So many times I hear people ask the question, “How do I keep from falling away from God?”  A similar question is, “How do I keep from sinning?”  Another is, “How do I keep on the straight and narrow?”  These questions have some thing in common that reveal the real problem.  First, they all begin with the phrase, “How do I …?”  We humans like to be in control and think that our success is dependent upon us.  Though there are some things that we are responsible for,  our keeping is not one of them.  Your effort to deliver yourself is a waste of time.  Your holding on to God is as futile as willing the sun to not rise in the morning.  Try as you may, you just cannot do it.  It is a humbling thing to realize that you are totally dependent upon God to deliver you and to keep you from falling.  It is His hold on you and not your hold on Him that is certain.  Your grip can be broken, but not His.  You are as secure as God, Himself is secure.

But not only is His grip secure, but He is the one who will present you to the Father, faultless.   Did you get that?  He will not only get you there but will deliver you there without a fault.  If you need cleaning up, His blood washes as white as snow;  if you owe debts, He paid it all;  if you have bad language or bad thoughts, He gives you a new heart and out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.  You are His workmanship and God don’t make no junk.

It is not a burden to the Lord to make such an investment in you.  Our verse testifies that He does it with exceeding joy.     Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.  Philippians 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.  He doesn’t hold back either.  He desires to give you the whole kingdom.   Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.  All good and perfect gifts come from Him.  He loves doing for you because He loves you and values you above all of creation.

The keeping is His part, the believing and trusting is your part.  Just do your part.

Blameless

1 Corinthians 1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Blameless is not the same as guiltless.  It is not the same as sinless either.  Other words with a similar meaning and are sometimes used interchangeably, but wrongly  are:  forgiven, sinless perfection, righteous, to name a few.  If we are to properly understand and teach the Word of God correctly, we must understand the relationships of these words and their specific meanings.  Lets look at the similarities and the differences of these words.

Guiltless:  means literally without guilt, innocent.  Having no knowledge or experience.  Since the Scripture is clear that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, this word does not describe any of us, in fact, of no one other than Jesus, Himself.  The fact that our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus and that He has made full payment of our sins can never remove the fact of our sin.  In other words, reverse history and remove the act from ever happening so that we are not guilty.  Even though we are forgiven, it does not remove our guilt.  We are all guilty of sin, but there is good news.

Sinless:  This word is not so easy to explain as the previous  word.  In it’s simplest form it means ‘without sin’.  There is another sense that the word is used in the Scriptures and that is ‘without chargeable sin’.  That is sin that has been committed but has been paid for and is no longer chargeable to the one who committed the sin.  Once the sin has been paid for, it is no longer charged to the individual and he is therefore without sin that needs to be paid for.  Please note that the payment (wages earned) for sin, is death.

Forgiven:  When sin is forgiven it means that the payment was paid by another.  To forgive will cost you something and death is the only payment for sin.  This price was paid by Jesus when He died on the cross for all sin, past, present, and future.  Yet it is not appropriated until it is confronted, confessed and concluded.  The woman at the well who was caught in the act of adultery, faced her accusers and then was sent away with the instruction to sin no more.  It is one things to feel the guilt of your actions.  Yet, without confession (that is to take ownership of your own guilt) the heart has not been transformed and it will be repeated time and time again.  The stubborn will must be subdued.  The conduct will remain unchanged until this happens.

Sinless Perfection:  is a false doctrine and cannot be validated either by Scripture or by reason.  Consider a gallon of poison.  If you add a gallon of pure water, it is still poison, just not as strong.  No matter how much pure water you add, you have not neutralized the poison and it remains.  You do not purify a substance by only adding nonpoisonous substance.  The poison must be eradicated. The Scripture states that without the shedding of blood (death) there is no remission.  Therefore we can never get good enough that our sin becomes of no count.

Righteous:   A right heart produces right actions.  A righteous  person is one who operates out of a right heart and a right spirit.  To be righteous is to be on the side of what is right.  The Scripture states that there is none good but God, therefore to be righteous is to have a heart and spirit that acts with God and not the spirit of this world of sin.  It is not to be understood as one who is perfect but on who endeavors to follow after rightness.  Whenever one gets off the right path, he make a course correction to align himself anew with God.

Blameless:  I love this word because it holds all of the possibilities of God’s favor and promise.  It means simply that my sin account has been drained and there is not a single sin remaining in my account that has not been covered by the blood of Jesus.  It does not mean that my guilt didn’t happen.  Nor, does it mean that the degree of my sin  is so great that the blood of Jesus won’t clean it.  It means that in spite of my guilt, I have the only remedy for sin and that brings hope and promise to know that I will be accepted into the family of God as His child.  Take a look as some of these scriptures with the view of being blameless.

Matthew 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

Philippians 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Colossians 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

1 Thessalonians 3:13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Dwelleth

John 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

[Greek – enoikeo, en-oy-keh’-o – to occupy a house, i.e. reside (figuratively,                                  inhabit, remain, inhere); by implication, to cohabit:–dwell.                                              –  meno, men’-o – a primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or                     expectancy):–abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand]

In the above text there are two words that are translated dwelleth as listed above.  They are quite similar in their meaning and invoke the idea that there is an ongoing or repeated action.  You will notice that the word ends with an eth ending which meant that in the original language it was either an action t that continued indefinitely or that it was an action that was repeated indefinitely.

In our modern world, we think of our will, that is what I want so our concept of Christianity is often slanted to the idea of convenience or desire.  The Bible knows nothing of that type of relationship for the Christian.  We give as it is convenient but the Bible teaches that we give 1. as we are prospered, 2. according to opportunity, 3.  the demand of necessity, and 4. as an act of faith in God.  Our service may come from duty, responsibility or desire but all too often it is because of selfish reasons rather than to deal with the old nature of sin or allow God to affect change in us.  We desire the blessing when we should desire the one who is blessing.

The concept of dwelling with God is not a duty or even a responsibility, it is a privilege and an opportunity.  It is a privilege because the infinite God desires to be with me.  It is an opportunity for me to become what I could never be without Him.  It requires us to open ourselves to him in prayer and faith.  It requires time in His word that He might speak to us about eternal things.  It requires sharing our lives with Him as He shares His life with us.  Dwelling with God is a life style not an occasional visit.

Notice that in John 6:56  that is a communion or participation together in the events of life (eating and drinking) or consuming the life of God.  The eth ending is attached to all three; eating continually, drinking continually, and dwelling continually.  Also notice in Romans 8:11 that the Holy Spirit is not only present with you continually but also is constantly quickening (making you alive) continually.  And finally, in I Corinthians 3:16 that you are the residence or dwelling of God.  The only place that will satisfy God as a residence is the heart of one who loves God back.  He loved us so much that He gave His only Son to die in our place.  Do we love Him enough to dwell with him in this life, as well as for eternity?

Our Conversation

2 Corinthians  1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

The word “conversation” is a word that has undergone change in meaning since it was originally written.  When the Bible was translated into English, the word was used to express the sum of what was done, what was said, and all of the interaction of the experience.  Today the term has been limited to only what was said so that if you read the passage as only what was said, you do not get the full of the meaning.

The above verse is one of those examples that make the understanding of the verse more difficult.  The apostle Paul is writing to the Church at Corinth, which he had established on his second missionary journey.  Later he wrote to this church in response to several important issues that they had asked him about.  Now he is writing a second letter to encourage the church and to further clarify their doctrine.

He uses the example of his own experience to clarify how a christian is to conduct themselves in their lives.  He points out that God is the one who has delivered them in the past and he is the one who is working in the present and even further, He is the one in whom Paul has placed his confidence in, to be delivered in the future.  (verse 10)

In verse 11 we see Paul pointing out that the Corinthians were also a part of Paul’s ministry in praying for them.  The Christian  walk is not a lone individual shinning like the sun, but a corroborative effort by all Christians that cause a celebration by everyone.

Now he points to his own rejoicing by saying that his own walk was one of simply focusing on God and following Him.  He point out that it was not one of “fleshly wisdom” that is present in the old nature but one of faith that follows the Spirit of God and Scriptures.  Then he makes the point that it is the grace of God that enables him to be successful in the world and especially with the Corinthians.

So many times, it is not the wonderful oratory that convinces and convicts, but it is the small things that God uses to reveal the consistency of the message.  Paul is thankful that he was dependent upon God working and not on his own wisdom.  They were the proof of God’s working.  We must place our faith in Him and not in ourselves.

Word Study – I AM

The first account that we have of God identifying Himself is in Exodus 3:14 where He answers Moses’ question of “Whom shall I say sent me?”  God’s response was, Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.  That answer sounds strange to us.  What kind of a name is I AM?  It doesn’t sound like a name but it does sound like a description which it really is.  God isn’t known by a name but by His attributes.  We use names to distinguish between others with the same attributes.  But there is no other with the same attributes as God.  There is none like Him so He is not identified by a name but by His attributes which there is none other like Him.

Choosing to identify Himself to Moses and the Hebrews, He basically said, ‘the one who is that has always been, and always will be the same is the one who is sending you.”  But it is even more clear when you realize that in all three tense, the same word for the self existent eternal God is only in the present tense.  In other words, there is no such thing as time ito God.  He is present in the past, present, as well as the future.  It is a hard concept to get your mind around but it does reveal a lot about The Eternal God who is unchanging.

This theme is picked up by Jesus in the Gospel Of John.  Jesus uses the phrase 23 times in reference to Himself being the self existing God by the use of the (ego eimi) I AM reference.  He also claimed to be the Messiah in John 4:26.  The Jews understood His claim in John 5:17-18 and in John 10:36 as a claim of deity in His declaration to be the Son of God.  In John 5:39 He stated that the scriptures testified of Him.  In John 10:30 He said He and His Father are one.  He further said that the Comforter (Holy Spirit) would testify of Him.  When He was arrested the soldiers went backwards and fell to the ground when He said I AM he.  Some of the more memorable descriptions include:

  • I AM the bread of Life
  • I AM the light of the world.
  • I AM the door of the sheep
  • I AM the good shepherd
  • I AM the resurrection and the life.
  • I AM the way, the truth, and the life
  • I AM the true vine

There is no misunderstanding who Jesus believed He is.  He made it clear that He is the Messiah, God in the flesh, God the Son.  The question that remains is do you believe it.  All of your eternity hangs on your answer.  He told Nicodemus, “You MUST be born again”  You will either become a witness of this truth or you will fight this truth.  Who do you say the son of man is?
