Word Study – Eternal life

Have you ever considered what the phrase “Eternal Life” really means?  For years, I thought that it meant that when I became a christian that from that point on I would never die.  You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that was not exactly what it means.  The word “Eternal” literally means without end.  Think with me for a moment about my idea of eternal life. It begins with a point or end so if it has an end point then it is not eternal.  It does not mean only from now on but it also goes infinitely in every other direction as well.  Our finite minds have a great difficulty grasping the infinite.  We immediately begin to imposed our finite concepts into the equation and it changes the meaning.

We must consider the concept in light of the infinite God.  He never had a beginning and has no end.  He is inexhaustible in all things. Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.  There is no knowledge that he does not have.  There is no power greater than His.  There is no place He is not present.  There is no life that does not come from Him, etc.  He is The Almighty God.  He is not like us finite, limited beings.  We think of Him as being like us but in reality we do not compare to Him.  Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?  (This verse does not imply that there are other gods, but to the things we humans worship as a god.)  God is so great that nothing we can imagine is comparable to Him.

Have you considered that everything that Satan is can offer you is temporal, that is of this world and temporary.  That is because he is a created being and not on the same plane as God.  It is not the picture of two equals fighting to see who will win, but one of two choices for us to choose to follow.  Satan is not an equal to God and his end is certain.  God, on the other hand, is eternal or without end.  Because we cannot fathom the whole of God, we cannot fathom the extent of “Eternal Life”.  We trace our life as beginning at birth, but that was when we were formed, not created.  We were created before God created the world.  Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.  We were identified and detailed from the very beginning of the plan of creation.

Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: God elected those who made their choice of Him to be His children or offspring.

Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Our promise of eternal life goes far beyond our concepts of from now on to include from forever more to forever more.  We were God’s plan from the beginning and to accomplish that plan He created time and space.  We are not a product of creation but creation was established for us, like the womb is a place to develop our body before we begin our “life here on earth”  The difference is that the life God has for us is eternal.

This is possible because we are in Jesus who is eternal.  He exchanges his eternal righteous life for our temporal life of sin.  It is received by our believing (trusting, relying, obeying, following) Him through life.
